So what is it?
Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking – it makes something we learn to do as babies twice as effective!
Nordic Walking uses poles to in order to add two major benefits to walking:
- The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs
- The poles help to propel the walker along – this means he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!
Teams from one2one Fitness staff and members hit the paintballing fields at Big Dunks, Delabole over the weekend, in a battle of muddy, messy paintball warfare!
Twenty heavily prepared members battled in out the paintball fields in what was a day of bruises, battle, and overall, belly-aching laughter, that left everyone craving a stiff drink! :-) Thanks to all the team at Big Dunks for giving us all a day to remember!
This was just one of the many events on the one2one Fitness social calendar that have been planned for the months ahead - including the next paintball battle! - so why not check the diary dates at reception the next time you're at the gym and sign up for our next event?! Miss it, MISS OUT!
Making time for exercise can take many forms, and there are a zillion little things you can do throughout your day to complement your exercise regime! We really enjoyed this post from Forbeswoman about how to enhance your exercise programme with these few small changes in your daily routine:
Random Acts of Exercise: Why Little Movements Can Have Big Benefits
For people who dread hitting the gym or going for a jog, this one’s for you. A new study finds that people who do more “incidental” physical activities – like sweeping or taking a stroll around the office – have better cardiorespiratory fitness than those who do less. Study author Ashlee McGuire and fitness expert Fred DeVito offer some suggestions for how to sprinkle these incidental acts into your day.
No time for exercise? Of course you have! It's about making time, and we really loved this piece from our friend across the pond, personal trainer Paul O'Brien about his client Caroline - a busy Mum of two - and how she MAKES EXERCISE HAPPEN!:
'Meet Caroline. She’s in her mid 40s, and is a working mother with two teenage kids. In her younger days she was a habitual exerciser, walking most days and enjoying a swim a couple of times a week in her local pool. Nowadays, she finds it extremely difficult to fit any exercise into her busy schedule. Lacking vitality and regularly feeling exhausted, she came to me for help.
'Caroline’s average day is pretty normal for a working mother. She is up every morning at 7am to sort out the kids and prepare for work. She works from 8.30am until 4pm, Monday to Friday. Most weekdays she picks her kids up from school or from a friend’s house. The kids are shuttled to and from music lessons, football training and dance class most days of the week.
In the fitness and health industries, it has widely been acknowledged for a long time that exercise can act as a preventative measure against some very serious illnesses, and diabetes is just one of them. But figures released this week showing that over 347million people in the world suffer from the disease, and that the number of people living with diabetes has more than doubled in the past thirty years, make for frightening reading.
We took a look at what our friend from across the pond, personal trainer Rob Yontz, had to say:
'Despite medical advances that have been made in recent years in the prevention of diabetes, a just-released study shows that the number of people suffering from this disease worldwide has more than doubled in the past 30 years.
It has been such a fantastic start to the New Year, with many new members joining both one2oneFitness and also Fitness Xpress, our ladies-only gym, and the results are really starting to show!
But if you were asked the question, 'are you fit and healthy?' what would be your reply?
Many people believe they are healthy through diet, and therefore do not need to exercise and perceive themselves as 'fit', but there is a BIG difference between being fit and being healthy.
We were so excited to read of the recent findings in a study of inactive 55-80 year olds in the USA in a news report earlier this week. At one2oneFitness, we are well aware of the benefits of exercise for adults of all ages, so this was welcome news for many of our clients. You can read the full report below or visit the new site here:
Aerobic exercise can expand the brain and restore powers of memory lost with age, research has shown. One year of moderate exercise was found to increase the size of the hippocampus - a part of the brain vital to memory and learning - in a group of older adults.
Well, 2011 is now well and truly underway, as will be the many detox and get-fit plans a lot of us will have undertaken for the new year. At One2one Fitness, we have a whole host of exciting New Year opportunities for you to take advantage of, to ensure your energyetic plans for a happier, healthier you, come to fruition!
